    fatty liver disease

Lipid metabolism and transport

  • Lipids, notably triglycerides and cholesterol, play major roles in energy storage and the maintenance of cell membranes.
They can be obtained from the food or synthesized by the body.
  • Since lipids are water-insoluble, they are in transported in the blood as lipoprotein particles (VLDL, LDL, chylomicrons, etc.).
The lipoproteins are produced by gut or liver and release much of their fat while passing through peripheral tissues (fat tissue, muscles, …),
    undergoing conversions in the process.

ApoB100 in lipid metabolism and transport

  • Apolipoprotein B100 (ApoB) is the core protein of the liver-derived lipoproteins (VLDL, IDL, LDL).

ApoB100 as an immunotherapeutic target

1. Antibody

  • An antibody, also known as an immunoglobulin (Ig), is a large, Y-shaped protein used by the immune system to identify and neutralize foreign substances such as pathogenic bacteria and viruses.
  • Each antibody recognizes a unique molecule of the pathogen, called an antigen.
  • Each of the two upper tips of the "Y" contains a paratope that is specific for one particular epitope on an antigen, allowing the two structures to bind together precisely.
  • - Medical applications
  • Disease diagnosis: Several methods that are based on detection of antigen-antibody complexes are used to diagnose infectious diseases
    (ELISA, immunofluorescence, Western blot, etc.).
  • Disease therapy: Monoclonal antibody therapies (rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, cancer, etc.).

2. Vaccine

  • A vaccine is a biological agent that provides active acquired immunity against infectious or malignant diseases.
  • Vaccines can be prophylactic (prevent or ameliorate a future infection) or therapeutic (fight ongoing diseases, for example cancer).
  • - Medical applications
  • Infectious disease vaccine: Microorganisms, bacteria, viruses …
  • Toxoid vaccine: Toxoid vaccines are made from inactivated toxic compounds.
  • Premium vaccine: Therapeutic vaccine, Prostate cancer vaccine (Provenge), Cervical cancer vaccine (Gardasil, Cervarix), anti-obesity vaccine (3HOTP), etc.
